Davao’s Road Closure for Eid’l Fitr Congregational Prayer on Apr 10, 11. Amidst the deliberations of the 20th Davao City Council during an extraordinary session held on the crisp Friday morning of April 5, 2024, at the hallowed halls of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, a momentous decision was made. An ordinance was passed, decreeing the temporary closure of Aurora Street, nestled within the vibrant confines of Barangay 32-D, Poblacion. This closure is ordained in preparation for the forthcoming Centralized Eid’l Fitr Congregational Prayer, a pivotal event in the community’s tapestry.
Thus, the arteries of Aurora Street shall be sealed shut from the ethereal dawn hours at 4 a.m. till the apex of the noon sun on both April 10 and April 11.
“In contemplation of the impending nocturnal congregation, the esteemed Mercy Islamic Foundation hath petitioned for this thoroughfare’s cessation at the designated juncture of time and space,” proclaims the decree with solemnity and resolve.
“Any national or local road, alley, park, or square may be temporarily closed during an actual emergency, or fiesta celebrations, public rallies, agricultural or industrial fairs, or an undertaking of public works and highways, telecommunications, and waterworks projects, the duration of which shall be specified by the local chief executive concerned in a written order,” according to Republic Act 7160, also known as the Local Government Code of 1991, section 21(c).

The co-chairperson of the Davao City Centralized Eid Prayer Council, Gabriel D. Naman, Deputy Mayor of the Maguindanao Tribe, Al Hajj, and Executive Program Director of the Madrasah Comprehensive Development and Promotion Unit, requested in a letter to Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte the temporary closure of Roxas Avenue, specifically the Night Market area. This led to the request for a resolution to enact an ordinance. The request was made because attendance will receive a spiritual message in addition to the required Eidul Fitr prayer.
In the meanwhile, in honor of the Feast of Ramadan, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. issued Proclamation Number 514, designating April 10 as a regular national holiday. On the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos’ proposal, the proclamation was issued.
“We must declare Wednesday, April 10, 2024, a regular holiday nationwide in observance of Eid’l Fitr (Feast of Ramadan) in order to bring the religious and cultural significance of the holiday to the forefront of national consciousness and to allow the entire Filipino nation to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in peace and harmony in the observance and celebration of Eid’l Fitr,” Marcos stated in the proclamation.
